Laboratories
Note ~ endogenous ACTH (single draw) is the preferred test for establishing Cushing’s disease. This test requires special handling (spinning, freezing, overnight shipping) but does not involve the injection of Dexamethasone which can trigger laminitis in a susceptible equine.

Insulin/glucose testing for IR should be drawn while the horse is receiving their normal hay ration, not after fasting. See the http://www.ecirhorse.com/ website for additional information on Cushing’s and IR testing.

When doing serial studies to monitor medication and progress, the same laboratory should be used.
